OnSkii Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 24, 2026
OnSkii ("we", "the app") is made by Allen Gurvits, Evanston, Illinois. This policy explains what the app collects and why. Questions: onskiiapp@gmail.com.
What we collect
Account information. Your email address and password (to sign you in; passwords are stored encrypted by our sign-in provider and we can't see them) and your profile: the display name, ability level and riding style you choose, and, if you add them, a profile photo, home mountain and short bio.
Public or private profile. You choose when you sign up, and can change it anytime in Settings.
- Private (the default): other OnSkii users can find your name and photo to send you a friend request. Only your friends can see your profile details, your runs and stats, and which ski area you're checked in at.
- Public: any signed-in OnSkii user can see your profile, your runs and stats, and which ski area you're checked in at today.
- Either way, your exact position is only ever shown to friends, and only when you turn on live location. Ski areas show how many people are checked in, counting private users only as a number.
Location.
- While you use the app: to record a run (speed, distance, altitude) and to find the ski area you're at when you tap Check in. Recorded runs store the totals (top speed, distance, vertical, time), not your GPS track.
- In the background, only if you turn on Auto check-in: to notice when you arrive at a ski area and check you in. We store which ski area and when, never your exact position.
-
In the background, only while Ski day mode is on: to notice when you ski down a run and when you're waiting in a lift line. Your GPS trail is processed on your phone and never uploaded. For runs we save the totals (start time, top and average speed, distance, vertical, duration) and the weather. For lift lines we save the lift, the wait in minutes and, to learn where lifts are, the location of the line. You can turn either part off, and Ski day mode turns off by itself after 10 hours.
-
Live location for friends, only if you turn it on: your position is shared with your OnSkii friends (and no one else) about once a minute. It turns off by itself at midnight, and turning it off deletes your shared position. A "meet here" flag you drop is shown to your friends for 3 hours.
You can turn all of these off at any time in the app or in your phone's location settings.
Things you post. Runs and their conditions, videos you attach to a run, and check-ins are visible according to your public/private setting above. Messages in a ski area's lodge chat are visible, with your display name, to people checked in at that ski area that day. Direct messages can only be sent between friends and are visible only to the two people in the conversation. Group chats are made of friends and are visible only to their members. Meet-up spots or runs you share into a chat are visible to that chat's members. Marketplace listings are visible to other signed-in users with your display name.
Anonymous reports. Lift wait reports (including ones timed automatically in Ski day mode), lift locations and snow condition reports are shown to everyone without your name. We keep a private record of who sent each report, which other users can't see, only to avoid sending you alerts about your own reports and to remove that link when you delete your account.
Run leaderboards and Best loop. Your GPS-recorded runs on a named trail can appear on that trail's leaderboard (your name and top speed), visible to the same people who can see your runs under your public/private setting. In Ski day mode we also save which lift each run came off; OnSkii uses everyone's laps only as anonymous averages (like "about 9 minutes up and down").
Crash check-in (optional). If you turn it on, OnSkii watches for a sudden stop during Ski day mode on your phone. If you don't answer "Are you OK?", your friends get a notification with where you stopped, and we keep a record of that alert. Don't rely on it in an emergency: contact ski patrol or 911.
Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store your phone's push address so we can send them (friends checking in, friend requests, direct messages, walk-on lifts where you are). Only you can see it, and turning notifications off deletes it. Notifications are delivered through Expo's push service and Apple or Google.
Reports and blocks. If you report content or block someone, we store that so we can review it and hide the blocked person's content from you.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data or share it with advertisers.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't show ads.
Services we use
- Supabase stores the app's data and photos and handles sign-in.
- Open-Meteo provides weather. The app sends it a ski area's coordinates (not yours) to get current conditions.
- Mapbox displays the map. Your phone loads map images from Mapbox, which (like any website) can see your phone's internet address and the map area being viewed, but OnSkii doesn't send Mapbox your account or your runs.
- Expo builds the app and delivers notifications.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data is kept until you delete it. You can delete individual runs, messages and listings in the app. To delete everything, go to Settings → Delete my account. This permanently removes your account, profile photo and everything you've posted within a few minutes. Anonymous lift-wait and snow reports stay in the app's averages, with no remaining link to you.
Safety
OnSkii is for people 13 and older. Content that harasses others, is hateful or sexual, or sells illegal items is not allowed. Reported content is reviewed within 24 hours, and accounts that break these rules are removed.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and let you know in the app.
